909 Daughter of the Regiment by William Kincaid
Thomas Blankenship, heir to an iron mill fortune, has two burning desires. One is to fight for the Union Army against the Confederates in the American Civil War. The other is to become a female. These seem irreconcilable until Thomas hits on a plan. As he is small-boned and fair of face, he can impersonate a young woman and volunteer to help the Northern cause.
As the newly-minted Lucinda, Thomas manages to assist the North in winning the war to save the country, using her female cunning and intelligence. After the way, Lucinda continues to have adventures of a more lusty kind until, assisted by a mysterious New Orleans woman and President Lincoln himself, she finally becomes the woman she has always wanted to be, as well as a wife and mother.
